Man accepts plea deal of 2 life terms for 2008 double murder

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man who admitted killing his girlfriend and her 18-year-old son will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Scott Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and a third count of attempted murder and was sentenced Monday to two consecutive life sentences.

He had been scheduled to go to trial in August, where he was facing the death penalty in the case.

On Monday, Davis said nothing as he shuffled into the courtroom in Charlotte to accept the plea deal.

The prosecutor summed up the case for the judge, saying Davis had been arrested moments after the shootings in December 2008, on Thornhill Drive.

"The defendant said, 'I'll cooperate. I'm not resisting. I shot them and I'd do it again,'" Prosecutor Anna Greene said.

The family of Gabrielle and Anjelo Kinard clung to each other as Greene went over the details of that night. She said Davis became angry when Gabrielle Kinard and her family told him he could no longer live with them, and that the Department of Social Services would take his infant child away if he did not leave the home.

Gabriella Kinard, who was 15 at the time, survived being shot in the face and was in the courtroom to confront Davis.

"I can't understand how someone could… could destroy somebody's life like that," Kinard said as she broke down in tears.

Davis appeared to be upset as he leaned forward in his chair.

Moments later as he walked toward a sentence of life in prison, he turned to her and her family and mouthed the words they had waited almost four years to hear: "I'm sorry"

"I think all of it was coming back to him, what had happened and what he had done," said his attorney, Terry Sherrill. "And I'm sure the heaviness of it all was weighing on him."
