CHESTERFIELD, S.C. — Curtis Gorny, 56, walked into a Chesterfield County courtroom Thursday, his face deeply bruised, his left arm bandaged from hand to elbow and in a sling.
Gorny told the judge he did not want a bond hearing and waived it until another day. So far, Gorny is charged with attempted murder, and four other charges related to guns and fleeing police. He made no comment in court, other than to answer "Yes, sir" and "No, sir" to the judge.
Gorny is accused of shooting his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend Olivia Weaver and her stepfather Johnnie Nolan in the parking lot of the Chesterfield County Courthouse on Wednesday. Officials said Weaver had just been to family court over a paternity test and a child support matter, Sheriff Sam Parker said.
Gorny ran up to them as they were getting into their car and fired a.357 revolver into the car. Weaver was hit three times, including her face and chest. Nolan was struck in the shoulder.
Parker said Gorny took off, leading his deputies on a 12-mile chase down Highway 9 toward Pageland. At one point, Parker said Gorny fired at deputies pursuing him before running over stop sticks, blowing a tire and wrecking his pickup.
Deputies said Gorny threw the .357 out the window, and they found a 9 mm pistol on the seat of the truck that they don't believe was fired.
Court records show Gorny has a long record of domestic violence, including several incidents against Weaver. Friends told Channel 9 that he would often show up at her home near Cheraw and harass her.
"He'd come over and park in the middle of the road and yell stupid things like "I'm gonna burn the house down.' I'd be out raking the yard and I'd have to run him off with pitchforks and stuff," said Blake Buchko. He also called the police more than once on Gorny when he wouldn't leave.
Parker said by Thursday, it had sunk in with several of his officers that they could've lost their lives during the chase.
"It hurts," Parker said. "Knowing I could've lost my officers to him. There's just no reason for what he did."
Eyewitness News obtained the dramatic radio traffic between deputies during the chase. It details a frightening event. Deputies talked about shutting down Highway 9 between Chesterfield and Pageland, and were very concerned about homeowners in the area where they said Gorny was shooting at them.
At one point, Parker is heard telling his deputies, "If you get a chance, get up there and take this clown out."
It appears Weaver and Nolan will be OK. Friends said Weaver will need reconstructive surgery to her face.
Gorny is expected to face three counts of attempted murder. It's not known when he'll appear in court again.
