STATESVILLE, N.C. — Deputies have arrested a 26-year-old man who they said shot and killed a woman in Statesville Tuesday night.

Just after 7 p.m., someone called 911 and told dispatchers about a domestic dispute at a home on Amity Hill Road. The caller said they could hear yelling and screaming coming from the house and then heard a gunshot.

A few minutes later, a man at that house called 911 and said a woman had come at him with a baseball bat and he had shot her.

Deputies found the shooter, Thomas Ulester Swakla, crouching down in the carport next to the home. When they told him to stand up and show his hands, they noticed a pistol tucked into the waistband of his pants.

Deputies seized the gun and took Swakla into custody. They then spotted a woman, Kayla Danae Davis, laying on the carport floor with severe injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

When deputies went inside the home they found another woman and three small children.

Swakla was taken to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office where he was interviewed by detectives and charged with murder.

No other details surrounding the crime have been released.

This is an ongoing investigation and more charges may be forthcoming.
