Gaston Co. woman says ex shot up her home and another with her toddler inside

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A woman says her ex-boyfriend shot up her house in Gaston County and also shot at a home with her 1-year-old daughter inside. That man is now behind bars on a charge of attempted murder, according to the Gaston County Police Department.

It happened just before 5 a.m. on Oct. 14. Police said they were called to Howard Fraley Lane near Dallas after receiving reports about a shooting.

At the home, police found several people who had been inside during the shooting. However, no one was hurt.

The woman who lived at the home spoke to Channel 9′s Ken Lemon on Tuesday. She was in the bedroom where the bullets hit, and she said she feels lucky to be alive. She said the bullets came close to killing her.

Lemon could see bullet holes spattered like paint across the wall of the home, windows, and car at the house.

On Friday, police arrested 27-year-old George Aviles. The woman said she finally feels safe knowing he is behind bars. She said she was living in terror -- she feared not just for her life, but also for the life of her 16-month-old child.

She said police think Aviles came back to fire more shots at least two more times. His ex-girlfriend said she believes it’s because he was angry at her.

“Feels like I was literally living a movie,” she said.

She ducked for cover during the first shooting on Oct. 14. The second came hours later. She said then, she was in the bed near where there are now two bullet holes.

“If this trailer didn’t ricochet them off, I would have been dead,” she said.

Police said Aviles then drove 22 miles away and fired shots that went into a home near Crowders Mountain. The woman’s 16-month-old daughter was sleeping with relatives there when a shot went through the door.

“My daughter had nothing to do with this,” she said. “My daughter has no play in this. My daughter didn’t ask for any of this.”

She said said Aviles returned to her home days later and again fired shots. She checked into a hotel for five days and wore a disguise when she left.

“That’s genuinely how scared I was to go out in public because if he was to see me, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” she said.

Aviles has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, three counts of felony discharging a weapon into occupied property, four counts of injury to personal property, felony probation violation, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

The woman was glad when police finally arrested Aviles, but she still worries for her safety.

“I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy,” she said.

Aviles is being held at the Gaston County jail and was given a $350,000 bond. Police said they are asking more questions about the other shootings, and it could end with new charges against Aviles.
