CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man who police say threatened his former girlfriend over and over again and then cut off his electronic monitor is back in custody after a tense 12-hour search.
Officers arrested Robert Barringer at an apartment complex off Monroe Road around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Barringer had been on the run since police say he cut off his electronic monitor in the 7700 block of North Tryon Street, and they were afraid he might go after the woman he is accused of attacking repeatedly in the past.
“They notified me within 20 minutes that he did cut it off and police came to my house,” the victim told Eyewitness News on Wednesday.
Police moved her and her mother out of their north Charlotte home to a safe location. It’s the same house where police said he had fired shotgun blasts into a bedroom in September when he came looking for her.
Barringer had reportedly told police he would not surrender without a fight and officers were on alert when they learned he may have been close to police headquarters Wednesday afternoon.
Officers finally convinced him to surrender peacefully, and the woman he is accused of terrorizing told Eyewitness News she could breathe again.
“I'm just blessed that they caught him. I really just hope they keep him this time because he's a maniac. He terrorized my family, my kids, the people I care about the most,” she said.
