Man charged with assaulting, killing stepfather, Rowan County authorities say

Abe Helms

SALISBURY, N.C. — A man died Wednesday, a day after being assaulted by his stepson, the sheriff’s office said.

Early Wednesday morning, deputies were called to 507 Yoast Road in Salisbury regarding an assault.

When they arrived, they learned Abe Alexander Helms, 45, had assaulted his 61-year-old stepfather, 68-year-old mother and 40-year-old girlfriend, deputies said.

Authorities said Helms was drunk when he assaulted the three and caused extensive damage to the home.

Deputies contacted a combative Helms, who they said had to be restrained.

Helms was taken to Novant Rowan Hospital to be treated for injuries he got while trying to destroy the home.

The assault victims declined to be taken to a hospital at the time but later, the stepfather, Eugene Drye, was taken to Atrium Cabarrus.

He said he had a pain in his head from the assault, officials said.

Drye’s condition became critical and on Wednesday afternoon, he died of his injuries, authorities said.

Investigators have now ruled the case a homicide.

Helms was charged with felony manslaughter and is in the Rowan County Detention Center.

Helms also faces assault charges.
