LENOIR, N.C. — One person died and another was seriously injured in a two-car crash in Lenoir on Saturday, according to the Lenoir Police Department.

Officers said they responded after 7 p.m. to the crash on Hickory Boulevard near the Hibriten Drive overpass.

According to police, Claude Howard Jr., 64, of Lenoir, was driving a GMC Safari van north on Hickory Boulevard when the van crossed the median and crashed into a Nissan Sentra traveling southbound.

Howard was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries. The 23-year-old driver of the Nissan Sentra was flown to CMC Main with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Lenoir police said they are continuing to investigate the crash, but they said impairment does not appear to be a factor.
