Man found dead in Burke County mobile home was shot by friend, deputies say

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A man was shot to death by his friend early Thursday morning in a Burke County mobile home, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they responded around 3 a.m. to a shooting at a mobile home park on Skyland Drive in Morganton.

They found 42-year-old Leonard Loehr dead from a gunshot wound inside his home.

Sheriff Steve Whisenant told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty that a friend came over to Loehr’s home to help him move when a a scuffle broke out over a gun and Loehr was shot.

According to deputies, the friend said the deadly shooting was in self-defense. Investigators told Channel 9 that they are interviewing other people who were inside the home when the shooting happened to figure out if that’s the truth.

“The other witnesses are somewhat collaborating that, so we will know more as the day continues,”Whisenant said.

The sheriff said once the investigation is complete, they will take the case to the district attorney and let him decide if charges will be filed.
