GASTONIA, N.C. — Police said a man was hit and killed by a train Wednesday morning in Gastonia.
Officers were called to the crossing at Hancock Street and East Airline Avenue at 9:12 a.m.
Police said witnesses told them a man was walking northbound on Hancock Street when he tried to walk across the tracks and beat the train.
Officials said Morgan Ray London, 57, was hit. He was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center where he died.
Witnesses said the railroad crossing arms were already down when London tried to cross the tracks.
