CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been sentenced to 17-23 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and other charges in 2018 in Caldwell County.

Brendan Marshall Withers, 28, was sentenced Tuesday during Caldwell County Superior Court after he pleaded guilty to attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and three counts of first-degree kidnapping.

In April 2018, authorities said Withers held three of his former co-workers at gunpoint while taking money from them and binding their hands with tape in Catawba County. He then forced them into a car and drove them near the Granite Falls area of Caldwell County.

One of the victims then tried to disarm Withers inside the vehicle and it continued outside the car as well. During the incident, Withers shot one of the victims and then ran away. The other two people were unharmed, officials said.

Withers eventually surrendered himself to authorities.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident with help from several other local law enforcement agencies.
