Family shaken after man tried to snatch 11-year-old when she got off school bus

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A family is shaken after they said a man tried to snatch their 11-year-old daughter when she got off her school bus Monday afternoon in north Charlotte.

The girl said she had just gotten off the bus around 3:45 p.m. and was walking near the intersection of Sunwalk Court and Suntrace Way off Statesville Avenue when a strange man grabbed her by the wrist.

Her family said she managed to yank her arm away and run home before the man could hurt her.

“My daughter’s very nervous now, my wife, too ... I’m very angry, scared, too,” the girl’s father said.

He told Channel 9 that he’s thankful his daughter is home safe and that she reacted quickly.

“I am very proud of my daughter. She is brave. She is really brave girl, and that makes me very proud,” he said.

The man who grabbed her is described as a white and 6 feet tall with a beard. The girl told police the man is in his 40s or 50s, and was wearing black pants and a black long-sleeved shirt.

Neighbor Dawn Graham told Channel 9 she’s been living in the area for four years and kids are outside all the time.

“We have never had no problems .... kids play, all the kids play, they’ll be in the cul-de-sac down there. They all play,” she said. “My daughter and her are the same age... we live down the street and they play together all the time.”

When Becker asked Graham if the situation is going to change things in the neighborhood, she said, “Of course.”

According to police, the attempted kidnapping doesn’t fit any of the other incidents that have happened in the area recently so their investigation is wide open.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
