Man wanted in Monroe murder captured

MONROE, N.C. — Police say they've captured a man who's been on the run since a shooting in April.

Four people were shot, one fatally, inside a Union County home early on Sunday April 29.

Torey Brooks, 36, is charged with killing 22-year-old David Duncan Jr. around 3 a.m. at a home on Massey Street Extension in Monroe.

Police said Brooks was arrested without incident in Matthews after tips and led investigators to his  location.

“We are happy to have Mr. Brooks in custody and I want to thank the Matthews Police Department and all of our officers that have worked so diligently to make this arrest,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard.

The night of the shooting, James Williams said he was asleep in the house and woke up to the sound of gunshots. He found the victims on the kitchen floor.

“He was laying right there,” Williams said. “When I come out of my room, went to the kitchen, I seen a guy dead down there and the girl was sitting at the table, and she was just (makes panting noise), and I said, ‘Somebody call the law.’”

Williams said he lives his with son and his son's roommate, who were having a party while he was sleeping.

"When I woke up, I heard, ‘Pow, pow, pow,'” Williams said.

Police said Duncan -- the man Williams found on his kitchen floor -- and three others were shot inside the home.

Williams said he didn't know why the shooting took place.

Brooks is charged with first-degree murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police said two of the shooting victims were released from the hospital on the same day, but the other was in critical condition.

The previous weekend, police responded to another deadly shooting in Monroe, in which a man died and three others were hurt after what police called a "shootout" inside a room at the Relax Inn.

Police are still investigating that shooting and Union County Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
