Many motorists still driving with faulty air bags

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Federal regulators appointed an independent agency to study where nationwide recalls stood three years after an air-bag recall that is blamed for 19 deaths.

There are 34 million American vehicles still on the road that have the dangerous Takata airbags still in them.

About 600,000 vehicles have not been repaired out of the 1 million recalls in North Carolina.

The executive director of the Center for Auto Safety said automakers need to do more to tell drivers their dangerous airbags need to be replaced.

“This is years after the announcement and what we're not seeing is enough manufacturers taking the effort that they take to sell you (and) to fix your car,” executive director Jason Levine said.

The defective air bags can hurl shrapnel at drivers and passengers involved in a crash.

The air bags most at risk for explosions are in vehicles from the early and mid-2000's, but even millions of newer vehicles also have air bags that need to be replaced.
