Power restored after large tree fell, blocking south Charlotte road

CHARLOTTE — A large tree fell before 3 a.m. Thursday, blocking a major road and leaving hundreds without power in south Charlotte.

The call came in to first responders as a crash at about 2:45 a.m. A Channel 9 crew could see the tree across Providence Road near Rutledge Avenue. The area is between South Sharon Amity Road and Sardis Road.

According to the Duke Energy outage map, 556 customers were without power in the area. The map showed power restored just before 7 a.m. The map also said the outage was first reported at 2:20 a.m.

Channel 9 has asked how the tree came down, and if anyone was hurt in the incident.

There was no information immediately available about when the tree would be moved from the road.
