Meck County Sheriff’s Office gives out free gun locks to try to stop accidental shootings

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte has had more than 100 homicides this year. That’s more than 100 families missing a loved one for the holidays.

And not included in that number are families who lost children in accidental shootings because of unsecured guns.

That’s one of the reasons why the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office gave out free gun locks on Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said many people are buying guns during the pandemic, and deputies want to make sure they’re responsible.

“With that, we need to make sure people have the ability to stay safe, so the gun lock is the way to do that,” said Nathaniel Harvey, community engagement officer.

People don’t need to go to one of these events to get their own gun lock. They can contact the sheriff’s office any time to get one.
