MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County is offering free HIV screenings on Thursday at two different locations to mark National HIV Testing Day.
The county is partnering with Atrium Health and Novant Health to test people for free between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Mobile units will be parked outside the Hal Marshall Building, 700 N. Tryon Street, in Uptown, and the Walgreens at 3251 Freedom Drive.
“Unfortunately, Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas has one of the largest rates of HIV in the nation,” Novant Health family medicine physician Dr. Rhett Brown said. “There’s many reasons for that, but we need to do a better job of screening and treatment.”
County officials said 6,600 people in Mecklenburg County have HIV – and more than 700 may have the disease and not know it. The county said there are between 250-300 new HIV-positive cases reported each year.
