CHARLOTTE — Police said a man is accused of driving recklessly and while impaired, causing a crash Saturday morning that left one of his passengers dead and the other seriously hurt.
The accident happened around 2:12 a.m. on Albemarle Road, near Central Avenue in east Charlotte. Officers found a white Dodge Challenger that had flipped over in a parking lot on Albemarle Road.
The driver, 25-year-old Anthonie Dashawn Fennell, and his right front seat passenger were taken to the hospital seriously hurt. His back seat passenger, Noah James McClaskey, 24, died at the scene, paramedics said.
Police said none of the people in the car were wearing seatbelts.
CMPD said Fennell was driving the Challenger south on Central Avenue when he drove straight through the Albemarle Road intersection and off the road.
The Dodge entered the parking lot and hit four metal poles before going airborne, overturning, and hitting five parked cars in the parking lot of a used car lot.
Fennell’s right front seat passenger was seriously hurt and had broken bones.
Police said Fennell showed signs of impairment. His impairment and reckless driving were found to have caused the crash, police said, and investigators took out warrants for charges of felony death by motor vehicle and felony serious injury by vehicle. He was also cited for driving while impaired, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane, police said.
Fennell is still at the hospital but will be taken to jail and served with warrants once he is released, officers said.
The investigation is still active and ongoing.
