Mixed feelings among residents about proposed Indian Trail development

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A Union County-based developer is presenting plans for a massive complex in Indian Trail.

The plan includes apartments, offices, stores, athletic fields, a YMCA and more near Highway 74 and Wesley Chapel Stouts Road.

“It’s kind of a shame because it’s already a very busy area,” Cindy Potter said. She added the town is already losing its rural feel.

The proposed development would be between Lowe’s and Sun Valley Commons. There is already construction in that shopping center and a new grocery store is being built across the street.

“I’d also be concerned about the traffic,” shopper Brooke Vinson said.

The Moser Group is presenting the plan for Sun Valley Marketplace to Indian Trail leaders Tuesday night.

The 61 acres is currently zoned commercial. Town leaders would have to approve rezoning to include residential for the 500 apartments proposed.

Potter was concerned about a high-density development bringing more families.

“Where are they going to put the children in schools that are already overcrowded?” she said.

Not everyone is opposed to the development as the town continues to grow.

“I think the additional shopping and housing will just help contribute to the population and tax base,” Stephen Hall said.

Indian Trail leaders are not voting on anything with the development Tuesday night. If it moves forward through the rezoning process, there will be a public hearing scheduled. That would likely be within the next few months.
