Mom on phone with daughter as man tried to lure her into vehicle

CHARLOTTE — A mother told Channel 9 a strange man tried to pick up her middle school daughter at the bus stop in Charlotte's popular Sedgefield neighborhood.

The bus stop is on Poindexter Drive and Dorchester Place, located by Sedgefield Middle School.

The 14-year-old lives in an apartment complex down the street from the bus stop. Her mother used to walk with her before she had surgery three weeks ago.

Every morning the girl talks to her mother on the phone until she steps on the bus. Thursday at 6 a.m., LaShon Rogers heard the voice of a man trying to lure her daughter.

"He asked me if I need a ride and I was like 'No!'" Shamonie Cole told Channel 9.

A man drove by Shamonie in a silver or grey sedan, turned around and came back.

"I just heard him say, 'hey, you!'  She was like, 'Momma this man trying to pick me up, he just told me, um, do I need a ride. To get in his car,'" Rogers said.

Rogers ran outside and got there in time to see the man turn around at Sedgefield Middle School, then drive away.

Despite her recent surgery, Rogers was there when the bus came back Thursday afternoon.

The mother and daughter are worried the man may come back.

"Think about all the kids that come to Sedgefield Middle School that got to walk to school that (are) by themselves," Rogers said.

Channel 9 saw police in the community Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for the department said an officer will come out and talk to the family about the incident.
