More than 500 CMS buses could be impacted by national recall, district says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The buses your kids ride to school on may not be safe -- thousands of school buses are under a recall for not having enough padding on their seats.

A national school bus recall affecting thousands of buses means one of them could be carrying your child to school.

The Thomas Built Buses are being recalled because the seats don't have enough padding, meaning in an accident they could cause injuries.

Channel 9 asked Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools about the recall weeks ago, and Friday, district officials confirmed it has more than 500 Thomas Built C2 buses that could be impacted.

Right now, the district said it does not have any information from the manufacturer as to how many are affected by the recall.

Parents who spoke to Eyewitness News anchor Genevieve Curtis said they want CMS to take action so students have a safe ride to school.

"I am extremely concerned," parent Dwayne Guise said. "Safety is the first priority. We need to have school buses in Charlotte that can get her kids to school safely bottom line."

This is not the first time Channel 9 has investigated the safety of your child's bus.

Earlier this year, a Channel 9 Investigation uncovered a report saying 46 percent of the buses inspected were taken out of service for repairs in 2018.

The report came 17 months after two CMS buses caught fire.
