Morganton residents to try to reason about utilities price hike

MORGANTON, N.C. — This week people in Morganton will try to reason with the City Council about a utilities price hike.

Neighbors have been collecting signatures for a petition.

The city doubled the price of its utility deposit to make up for people not paying power bills.

People with great credit only have to pay $190.

Those with good credit pay $300, but people with poor credit now have to pay $400.

"All groups of people would be affected by this extreme amount. Most people said they are barely getting by," said petition organizer Aziz Omer.

Leaders will present the petition at the City Council's meeting this week.

They plan to suggest an increase of $260 instead of $400.
