NC deputy shot, flown to hospital; suspect in custody

Craven County shooting (WITN)

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. — A sheriff’s deputy was flown to the hospital after they were shot Friday night in Craven County, WITN reports.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told WITN three deputies were called to a home just outside of New Bern for a wellness check and to serve commitment papers.

Hughes said the suspect’s family had called and were concerned about him. When deputies arrived, the suspect opened fire, hitting one of them. The other two deputies were trapped inside the home but not seriously hurt, he said.

The deputies returned fire and hit the suspect multiple times. He eventually came out of the home and was taken into custody, Hughes said.

Hughes does not believe the deputy’s injuries are life-threatening and the deputy was talking.

The deputy was flown to a Greenville hospital and the suspect was also taken to the hospital.
