NC man first to win $3M in new Mega Millions game

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Officials with the N.C. Education Lottery say a Rowan County man is the first in the nation to win $3 million playing the new Mega Millions game.

Lottery officials say Everette Sloop Jr. of Rockwell bought a Quick Pick ticket, which matched all five white balls but not the Mega Ball in last Friday's drawing. Because he added the $1 Megaplier feature and the Megaplier in the drawing was 3X, the ticket was worth $3 million.

Sloop said he was sitting in his car on Saturday morning when he learned of his win.

After state and federal taxes, Sloop took home $2,040,000. He said he plans to use the money to buy a new house, a car for his mother and take care of his family.
