NC mother’s holiday lights honoring son overseas creates battle with HOA

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina military mother’s special way to honor her son stationed overseas has her in a battle with her homeowners association, WTVD reported.

The HOA said the red, white and blue lights hanging up along her porch in Wake County must be taken down.

The HOA book shows outside seasonal lights must be displayed up to five weeks prior to and three weeks after the holiday season.

It’s past that time frame now, but Nancy Turner said she is not budging to take the lights down.

“When I came back saying these are not seasonal, that’s when it started to get tense. And I think instead of saying, ‘You know what? You’re right,’ she said, ‘Nope this is our rules and we’re sticking to it,’ without even looking,” said Turner.

The association could fine her $50 every day the lights are up, but Turner said she is willing to pay that until her son comes back to Fort Bragg.

“I just don’t see how one string of lights is bringing down property value. Seasonal decorations and showing support for our military are two different things,” said Turner.

A spokesperson for Turner’s HOA said in a statement to WTVD:

“For the record these Covenants/Rules are from the Sheldon Place HOA Community for which Ms. Turner resides and as an owner, she signed at closing that she would abide by the Associations Governing Documents. No further comment - this is a Board matter."
