NCSHP: 2 killed, 1 hurt in Ashe County crash

ASHE COUNTY, N.C. — Two people are dead after a crash in Ashe County on Sunday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).

Troopers were called to US 221 near Woodstown Road just before 2:30 p.m. to investigate a fatal crash.

NCSHP says a 2011 GMC Cayon was driving south on US 221 during heavy rain, crossed the median, and hit a 2022 Honda CRV head-on.

The driver of the canyon, 21-year-old Nicholas Thomas Sponholz from Fleetwood, suffered minor injuries and wasn’t taken to the hospital.

Troopers say the driver of the CRV, Bruce Louis Schneggenburger, 56, from Advance, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the CRV, Stephanie Ann Schneggenburger, 55, from Advance, was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

NCSHP charged Sponholz with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to maintain lane control.
