Company tells nearly 100 homeless people they must leave by Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 has learned an uptown company is telling about 100 homeless people they are trespassing and that the group needs to leave by next Friday.

WB Moore Company, an electrical contractor company, owns the property on North Poplar Street near 12th and Graham streets.

The company said the people are trespassing and need to leave by Friday at 5 p.m. They have also requested Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers help and are starting demolition there a few days later.

Company leaders added The Roof Above has been notified and they will be at the property next week to help those in need with access to resources and find alternative accommodations.

“The number one question that everyone has is well where do these folks go and that is a great question there is a mire of challenges that these individuals experience in finding the right housing. And I think a lot of it comes down to the affordability,” Randall Hitt, with The Roof Above said.

The Roof Above told Channel 9 that the company contacted them, concerned about the homeless people on their property and said their plan to use the lot has been in place since February.

This comes after a Charlotte landlord filed a lawsuit to remove a much larger homeless camp around a property near uptown.

The owner claims the tents along North Tryon and North College Streets are filled with trash, debris and waste. He said he’s had to pay out of pocket to clean up the area, his customers have been harassed and his property is decreasing in value.

They are seeking damages and want a judge to remove the people.

Channel 9 reported the people living in the area won’t be forced to move during the Republican National Convention.

CMPD said it won’t remove them either unless a property owner files a trespassing complaint.
