New car rental facility opens at Charlotte Douglas International

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new car rental facility at Charlotte Douglas International Airport inside the new parking deck is set to open to relieve traffic.

It also makes way for a new domestic terminal that could lead to a greater selection of flights.

The new facility just opened Wednesday with tall ceilings and modern lighting and is a 50-foot walk from the terminal for flyers.

There will be no more shuttles from the old rental car lots, relieving congestion.

Inside the deck, customers get their cars sheltered from the wind and rain.

The move is about more than convenience as the airport plans to build a new concourse where the old rental lots are next spring.

"A lot of the carriers have said they want more facilities," Deputy Aviation Director Jack Christine said.

The concourse will have eight to 12 new gates with the option to bring new flights and airlines.

"Any time you add facilities, carriers can use them for extra opportunities and additional frequency, additional city pairs," Christine said.

It's the latest in a flurry of growth at the airport.

The new airport entrance road could be open next week and the Federal Aviation Administration will build a new tower next spring.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport continues to have strong passenger numbers, officials said.

Reports said 6.46 million travelers passed through the airport in January and February, down slightly from the 6.48 million from the same time last year.
