Drivers are feeling relieved in south Charlotte after hearing Interstate 485 between Rea Road and Interstate 77 will be open by Saturday morning.
“Last night we were just driving through and everything was backed up,” one driver told Channel 9. “And we’re looking forward to having it all open.”
NCDOT Division 10 Director of Community Outreach Warren Cooksey said the lanes will be open, but it will not be as smooth a ride.
“Drivers may notice the ride is a little rougher than they would expect, but it’s certainly safe,” Cooksey said.
The roads may be bumpy because the final layer of asphalt will not be laid until spring.
“The contractors will be back to put that final layer on to make sure that there’s a smooth ride, but we didn’t want to delay availability of lanes open for just that last layer of asphalt,” Cooksey said.
The third lane on the outer loop opened Thursday.
The lanes on the inner loop will be open Saturday morning.
Construction on a noise wall and finishing work around the I-485 ramps to Johnston Road are also on the agenda to be completed by the end of the year.
