MATTHEWS, N.C. — After weeks of debate, a local high school finally held its graduation ceremony on Wednesday.
Channel 9’s Gina Esposito spoke to students graduating from Butler High School in Matthews, who said that while the graduation was not what they had hoped for, it would be one they’d remember.
“I feel excited,” said Adriana Celaya-Cortez a graduate. “A little bummed out that it’s not regular graduation, still very grateful and happy.”
"I wish it was normal,” said graduate Colleen Cherian. “But it’s history, it’s something new, no one has done this before … it’s kind of cool.”
The graduates drove by Butler High School with their families in decorated cars. Teachers blew horns and cheered for them. Then, they stopped to take a picture with a cardboard cut out of current and past principals.
After, they greeted one of the principals in person, and were handed their diplomas.

Channel 9’s Gina Esposito spoke to one family who said seeing their son graduate meant the world to them.
“He has autism. I'm sorry, it’s just emotional,” said Laura Hicks, a mom to one of the graduates. “But we're super excited. And so is he. Obviously, we are going to have a party for him. We’re going to have cake.”
One student who would’ve graduated this year, Bobby McKeithen, was recognized in the school’s virtual graduation video. The Butler High School student was killed in a shooting on campus almost two years ago.
School principal Vincent Golden said his family will receive a memorial certificate.
“They were very excited when they heard from us just to know we haven’t forgotten them,” Golden said.
He also said they wanted to make sure the graduation was special for everyone. Although graduates couldn’t get out of their cars to hug their classmates of four years, many people told Gina the effort it took to make this happen touched them in so many ways.
“It feels awesome,” said graduate John Boles. “I wish this could be a lasting moment.”
“I’m speechless actually,” said parent Diane Daniels. “I’m really really happy, proud of her. Long four years.”
