LAKE WYLIE — A no swimming advisory was lifted Thursday for a cove on Lake Wylie after sewage discharged into the water two days before, officials said.

The broken sewer pipe was upstream from the Highway 49 bridge in the Riverpointe community.

The pipe was immediately repaired and the sewage discharge has stopped, officials said.

About 160 gallons spilled into the cove.

Nearby, there were two marinas, a restaurant, boat ramps and the McDowell Nature Preserve.

“No swimming” buoys could be seen Tuesday floating in the cove north of the Buster Boyd Bridge.

Sabrina Solaka, her son and their dog were at the adjacent nature preserve.

"He gets in the water. He loves to swim,” Solaka said Tuesday. “Today, he took the dog and he (went) swimming in the water."

Swimming was allowed at the preserve and officials said the water in the neighboring cove would be OK by Thursday.

"We were out there,” said Caroline Burgett, who is with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Stormwater Services. “The water looks clear. There was no evidence of sewage in the water, no odor, no solids. The water looks great."

Water samples collected by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ staff reveal that bacteria counts are within safe limits, according to a news release on Thursday.
