North Carolina health officials identify locations of outbreaks

RALEIGH — Facing pressure from advocacy groups and media outlets, North Carolina health officials released details for the first time Monday on the locations of nursing homes and other group living facilities with COVID-19 outbreaks across the state.

The move marks an about-face for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which had said previously that identifying facilities with outbreaks would reveal confidential health information for patients.

As of Monday, DHHS reported more than 2,500 cases of COVID-19 and more than 150 deaths from the virus in “congregate living” settings, which include nursing homes, prisons and residential care facilities.

Infections in those settings account for roughly half of all deaths in the state.

In releasing the data about locations of deaths and cases in group facilities, North Carolina joins other states, including Georgia, California, Ohio, Illinois and New York.

The DHHS plans to update the figures twice a week through its existing COVID-19 data portal.

The data released on Monday reflected the following in Mecklenburg County long-term care facilities:

  • Social at Cotswold: 23 cases, 3 deaths
  • Forsynthia Group Home: 3 cases
  • The Laurels: 2 cases
  • Shelburne Place: 15 cases
  • Charlotte Square: 11 cases
  • Pavilion Health Center: 26 cases, 3 deaths
  • Huntersville Oaks: 2 cases
  • Hunter Woods Nursing & Rehab: 4 cases
  • Carrington Place: 18 cases, 1 death
  • Autumn Care (Cornelius): 53 cases, 10 deaths
