GASTONIA, N.C. — Police in Gastonia are looking for someone who threw a rock off a bridge over Interstate 85 south.
The incident happened Tuesday near Exit 19 just before 7:30 p.m.
The victim wasn't hurt, but he spoke to Eyewitness News about the moments he called terrifying.
Thomas Stang, said he was on his way home from work last night when something hit his car after he crossed under the overpass at Exit 19 on I-85 south.
"I thought I hit something but when I pulled over off the exit ramp I walked down there, and it was a massive rock," said Stang.
It was a rock he describes as bigger than a bowling ball. It hit the back right end of his car just inches from the back window. Stang said he saw two people on the East Ozark Bridge as he drove under the overpass, but when he pulled over, they took off and he called police.
"Unfortunately, I think it was a kid, thinking it was cool, but it's not cool because someone could have been killed," said Stang.
Stang didn't get a good look at the people, but said he's grateful he wasn't hurt and even more thankful his kids weren't in the car.
"Any other time when I'm not coming home from work, my kids are always with me and they're two babies I've got a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old and they're both in booster seats, and they're always in the back seat," he said.
WSOC-TV checked with police, who said this seems to be an isolated incident. In the meantime, police say they'll be patrolling the area and the bridge to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Stang said he'll be taking a different way home from now on.
"I think I'm going to start taking a different route where I don't have to go under bridges. Because you know if it would have hit my windshield, landed in my lap or hit my face, I wouldn't be here talking," he said.
Police do not have a description of the people Stang saw.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000.
