Hotel offers reward after clerk shot during robbery

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are searching for a suspect in an armed robbery and a shooting that happened within an hour of each other Thursday night.

A man entered the Drury Inn and Suites in University City just before 8 p.m. and approached the clerk, officials said. The man shot the clerk and fled the hotel, according to police.

The woman was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials. She was alert and conscious at the time.

Police said the shooting at the hotel on West W.T. Harris Boulevard is connected to a robbery that happened nearby earlier in the night.

A spokesman for the Drury Inn told Eyewitness News Friday that they are not releasing information about the clerk, but they have released surveillance video to the police department. Management at the hotel is offering a $5,000 reward to find the person who shot a clerk during the robbery.

About 40 minutes before the shooting, the same robber entered the Roadway Inn on West Sugar Creek Road, brandished a weapon and demanded money from the inn, police said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his late 20s and is about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. He has a thin build with short dreadlocks and was last seen wearing a red T-shirt and camouflage shorts.

Police released surveillance pictures from the robbery and are asking anyone who knows the suspect to call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
