BOONE, N.C. — Boone police arrested the driver of a vehicle that had three children inside after he led them on a chase Monday night onto the Appalachian State University campus, officials said.
Boone police attempted to stop Richard Dugger, 22, of Mountain City, Tennessee, for a traffic violation but he sped away from the scene on State Highway 105 near Ross Chrysler.
Dugger tried to drive on a sidewalk when a police vehicle struck his car, ending the chase.
Inside the car was a woman and her three children, ranging from 5 to 11 years old.
Authorities did not know there were children in the car when the pursuit ensued. No injuries were reported.
Dugger was charged with felonious speeding to elude arrest and three counts of misdemeanor child abuse. He is under a $10,000 secured bail set pending an appearance Friday in Watauga County District Court.
"Dugger was charged with a felony due to speeding in excess of 15 mph over the speed limit, reckless driving as proscribed by G.S. 20-140 and driving with a child under 12 years of age in the vehicle," Police Chief Dana Crawford said. "We are very thankful there was no one injured during this incident. I would like to commend the officers who acted with high regard for the safety of the public and responded appropriately."
