Sheriff's Office: Man shot in face over ongoing land dispute

HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba County Sheriff's Office said a man was shot over an ongoing land dispute between two people.

Hunter Wade Lail and a friend were hunting on some land off 39th Avenue NE in Hickory around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sheriff's Office said Lail and his friend saw Johnny Lipps walking toward them. There is an ongoing land dispute between Lipps and the Lails. Officials said Lail and his friend saw Lipps fire three or four shots in their direction. Officials said when Lipps was within 20 feet of them, Lail and his friend told him not to shoot them. Lipps responded he was just going to graze them.

Lipps fired one shot and Lail was hit in the face, officials said. Lail and his friend went to Lail's house and called authorities.

Lipps was arrested on a attempted murder charge at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Lail was taken to Baptist Hospital.
