Officials initially rule 88-year-old's death as natural

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eyewitness News has learned 88-year-old Dorothy Gregg's death was initially ruled as natural by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Eyewitness News was told that after family members noticed her credit card was missing police then discovered they were now investigating a homicide.

The suspect, Robert Nixon, appeared before a judge Tuesday for his initial court appearance.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives were called to Gregg's home Thursday on Plain View Road after family members found Gregg unconscious.

Gregg was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two days later, Gregg's family members called police after noticing the victim's credit card was missing.

CMPD investigators got involved and had the medical examiner to take another look at Gregg's body, which is when authorities discovered Gregg's throat had been crushed.

CMPD announced Sunday Nixon was arrested in connection with Gregg's death. They said he used her credit card to buy cigarettes and a Cherry Coke.
