Olsen family leads "Back to Basics" football camp in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The “Back to Basics” football camp at Charlotte Country Day School became a family affair for the Olsens this week.

Chris Olsen hosted the camp as his son, Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, was one of a number of Olsens chipping in to recreate the summers of their childhood.

The camp goes until Friday for kids between the ages of 8-14.

Chris Olsen, the legendary former football coach at Wayne Hills High School in New Jersey, is back in his element.

For years, Olsen ran the camp in New Jersey where Greg Olsen and his brothers were fixtures as campers.

This camp, Chris Olsen’s grandchildren were included.

“What makes it special is having my grandchildren here,” Chris Olsen said. “That makes it a lot of fun and brings back a lot of great memories.”

Chris Olsen’s grandchildren, Tate and TJ, made for three generations on the same football field.

As Chris coached his grandkids, Greg Olsen couldn’t help but think back to those summers growing up receiving the same instruction.

“He just can't help himself. It's in his blood,” Greg Olsen said. “It's all we've ever known. He's probably the biggest reason I am where I am today.”

It turns out that coaching from your dad never stops for an all-pro tight end with three-straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

“After the games, there's quite a critique that goes on,” Greg Olsen said. “He's never going to stop. He can't.”

“I'll try to do it in a nice way,” Chris Olsen said. “I'll say, ‘Greg what happened on that one play?’ So yeah, I put my two cents in.”
