Paralyzed North Carolina woman welcomes baby via surrogate

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman paralyzed from the chest down after a freak accident at a month before her wedding has welcomed a newborn baby via surrogate.

WRAL-TV reports 29-year-old Rachel Friedman Chapman and husband Chris Chapman welcomed daughter Kaylee Rae Chapman on April 26. Chapman was paralyzed in a freak accident four years ago at a bachelorette party when her best friend shoved her into a pool. She and Chris were only a month away from their wedding.

While Chapman is able to have children, a medicine she takes would make a pregnancy risky. Friedman's friend from college, Laurel Humes, offered to be the surrogate.

A crew from TLC is documenting the couple's life as first-time parents.
