Search continues for missing ASU student

BOONE, N.C. — Family and friends continue the search for missing Appalachian State Student Anna Smith and there are more questions about the case.

Eyewitness News reporter Paige Hansen was in Boone tonight where she's asking police to clarify what they're calling inconsistencies about the disappearance.

Police said there's been a lot of misinformation in this case and it's been a frustration for investigators.

Smith hasn't been seen on campus or anywhere for the past eight days.

Smith's family said previously she'd been assaulted off campus before she disappeared Sept 3.

Smith's father said Thursday he knew nothing about that.

Police said Thursday afternoon investigated that claim but so far have not found any evidence to support that Smith suffered a sexual assault before she was reported missing.

Police wouldn't tell me who reported to them that she might have been sexually assaulted.

Eyewitness News spoke with her father Dan Smith.

“I've had seven days of the worst nightmare that any parent could ever, ever fathom,” he said.“We’ve scoured these mountains, trails and hills on and off campus and have found nothing."

Police are interviewing and re-interviewing people with any information but did not do any physical searches Thursday.

Police said Anna Smith returned to campus after being home in High Point on Labor Day.

They say she did not have her laptop or cellphone in Boone.

“There is just a hole in our hearts,” said Dan Smith.  “We need more help, more resources. What would you do if it were your daughter who vanished?”
