CHARLOTTE — One Charlotte YMCA is about to begin a massive renovation project costing more than $20 million.
A parking garage, more workout space and upgraded group exercise rooms are just some of the construction projects set to start this year.
Four thousand people visit the Dowd Branch on Morehead Street every day to hit the treadmills, lift weights or take a group exercise class.
The 55-year-old facility will soon get major upgrades, including a 28,000 square-foot addition with a glass front facing the city.
Plus, officials are planning to address a big challenge for members -- parking.
Dowd YMCA Executive Director Chris Orr said, "We're going to be building a parking deck on site and are working with the city on the best location for that right now."
Orr said extensive renovations will happen inside, too, to cater to a growing female clientele.
"This place was built for men when it opened back in 1960," he said.
Karen Combs has been working out at the Dowd for 10 years and she's excited about having more group exercise rooms, like private studios for yoga and barre classes.
"My wife takes classes at 6 in the morning and I come in later and work on the weights and other aerobic machines," said member Dave Walker.
YMCA officials have already raised $10 million in donations toward the more than $20 million cost.
They hope the new and improved Dowd Branch will continue to make a difference in the physical and spiritual health of the community.
Member Davis Kuykendall said, "It is a whole lot more than just a work out. It's a total life workout."
