Pastor's wife calls 911: 'Looks like it shot him in the heart'

Family, friends and church members are remembering the years of dedication and passion Bishop Phillip Davis gave to Nations Ford Community Church and the Charlotte community.

“His impact was pretty huge," said Todd Pipkin, who now runs the Male Leadership Academy of Charlotte that Davis founded.

After Davis founded the church in 1988, he started the Envision Life School of Leadership and Ministry, as well as the Male Leadership Academy. Davis' message in a YouTube clip resonates maybe even more now.

"Success not only is being faithful, but it is persevering beyond your pain and outlasting your problems,” Davis said.

Now those efforts will live on in his legacy.

His wife, Cynthia Davis, called 911 Saturday afternoon from their Union County home after finding Davis. He had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun.

"Looks like it shot him in the heart. Can you get here right away? Oh my goodness. Oh God,” Cynthia Davis told a 911 dispatcher.

Davis spent nearly 40 years in ministry and wrote three books. He's remembered as a man of God who touched many lives.

"We'll all pull together and make it stronger and make it better and definitely continue to move his vision forward,” Pipkin told Channel 9.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
