MATTHEWS, N.C. — Emergency crews were on the scene of a gas leak near the Novant Health Matthews Medical Center.
Police had Highway 51 down to one lane as Piedmont Natural Gas officials tried to fix the leak.
It was reopened around 1:40 p.m.

Crews said they planned to evacuate an oncology center next to the hospital, Matthews police said. A Medic bus has been brought in to assist with the oncology patients.
Channel 9 anchor Liz Foster said a smell of gas came into the Novant health chemotherapy treatment center, but there were not any high readings inside.
Foster said there has not been any evacuations as of yet.
Chopper 9 flew over the scene.
