Police: 3 charged in fatal shooting on Manning Road

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in Charlotte have identified the victim of the city's latest homicide, but they are not saying if they are close to making an arrest in the case.

Detectives say they found James David Lockhart, 32, dead in a car on Manning Road in the Derita community at 10:25 Sunday night.

They said he was shot, but have not released other details of their investigation.

Neighbors in the quiet community off North Graham Street said they had heard the shots but were not sure if they were fireworks because the community doesn't often hear gunshots.

But when police showed up with crime scene tape, it soon became apparent that someone had been killed, and Paul Self said it was especially painful when Lockhart's family showed up.

"I know it was a sad scene -- brothers, sisters ... weeping. I mean people lying in the street just sobbing," Self said.

Most neighbors were genuinely surprised by the shooting that appeared to have no easy explanations.

"It's a shock. ... it's a shock to hear it," said Rev. Terry Wallace, pastor of the church next to where Lockhart died.

"I guess it's something we'll be talking about in the neighborhood meetings," Wallace said.

Police chagred 28-year-old Robert Marton, 25-year-old Richard Payne and 31-year-old Moises Puente in connection to the shooting.

All three suspects were charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
