Police catch Chester County sex offender in mother's attic

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A Chester County sex offender is back in jail just days after detectives said he raped a young girl.

Chester police, sheriff's deputies and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents have been looking for John Lowery for more than a week now.

Lowery was brought into the detention center Thursday afternoon following his arrest. He was caught in the attic of his mother's home on Pinckney Street.

Lowery was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl on Nov. 3 at a house on Sterling Street. He was apparently a friend of the family where the girl was staying.

Police sent out an email blast about it this week after trying to find him for a week. We're told those tips helped lead to his arrest.

"The mother came to the door. After a few words with her, she admitted he was in there somewhere," said Andre Williams, Chester police chief. "We had to do a huge search, and then we found him up in the attic, and we had to bring him down from the attic."

Lowery, 42, goes by nearly a dozen aliases, and was already a registered sex offender for a crime involving a teenage girl that happened in West Virginia.

Now he's charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
