CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A small amount of cocaine and an electronic scale were found inside a student’s backpack at Statesville Road Elementary School, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools police said the child may have been the one who went to an administrator two weeks ago and told them there was something in their backpack that didn’t belong.
Police said they spoke with the child’s mother, who admitted the bag was hers, but not the drugs or the scale that were inside. Officers also found $95 in cash in the bag.
But police said the evidence doesn’t add up enough to charge the child’s mother, or anyone else in the case.
Parents like Kareem Warren are left trying to understand the whole situation.
“Why would an elementary child have cocaine? And why wouldn’t the administration notify the parents of something like that?” Warren asked.
A CMS spokesman said the school didn’t notify other parents because the drugs didn’t pose a threat to students or staff.
Police have not released the student’s name, their age or even they’re a boy or girl. But they did say the child is a good student who has not had any problems and is doing OK since the incident.
