Customer says suspect held gun to her head during Statesville bank robbery

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Police are looking for three men they said robbed a Statesville credit union Monday afternoon, donning masks and terrorizing customers.

Officers were called around 12:30 p.m. to the State Employees Credit Union on Wilkesboro Highway.

Several customers were inside the credit union when it was robbed, and while nobody was hurt, the crime left many of those inside traumatized.

People inside told Channel 9 one of the robbers jumped over the counter while the other two ordered customers and employees to the floor.

One customer told reporter Dave Faherty that an employee was able to get her and her young children under a desk, while another customer said one of the masked robbers put a gun to her head.

Veronica Brown was cashing a check.

“I’m just so shook up I don’t know what to say,” Brown said. “The gun was at my head. It was just scary.”

Channel 9 Skyzoom flew over the bank and could see police in the parking lot.

Channel 9 saw both the Iredell County sheriff as well as the Statesville police chief at the scene. They said the getaway car, a white 2009 Honda Accord, was stolen at gunpoint out of Charlotte but was later found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood.

The chief said he thinks the suspects got into another vehicle.

Customers are thankful no one was hurt.

“I don’t understand people who have the audacity to rob places like this,” customer Tanner Abraham said. “Steal from the good and do what? You’re gonna get caught eventually. “

Officials have not said how much money the robbers got away with.
