2 charged after tip leads Shelby police to homicide scene

A Shelby neighborhood was evacuated in the middle of the night after a body was found inside a home.

Two people have been charged and police are calling it murder, but there are still some major questions in the case.

Investigators told Channel 9 they are still trying to figure out a motive.

A call to Crime Stoppers led police to the home. They said when they arrived, they saw two people who live there standing over a body in the garage.

"The officer said as he pulled into the driveway he saw the garage doors close," said Shelby Police Capt. Rick Stafford.

A few minutes later, police found Jesse Hoppes and Simms Wilson leaving their home around 2 a.m.

Officers believe they were walking away from the scene of a homicide they committed.

"That's very shocking. It's usually very quiet over here," said neighbor Eric Webber.

Police found the body of 24-year-old Earl Guy Hall in the garage.

Channel 9 was told he was friends with the couple.  Police said it appears he was shot and killed.

Police were not sure if there was a killer on the loose so they evacuated the house next door.

"Very loud banging on the door struck me as unusual being that I noticed it was almost three in the morning," said neighbor Paul Foster. "We didn't know if there was an escaped convict nearby, (or a) robbery."

Foster owns the home where the homicide occurred. He was shocked to learn a man had been killed there.

He said his tenants, Hoppes and Wilson, moved in five months ago and he hadn't had any problems with them.

Hoppes is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Wilson is charged with accessory after the fact of a felony.

"We are filling every lead we got, just trying to make sure nothing is left unturned in this case," Stafford said.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the victim is asked to call Shelby police.
