CONOVER, N.C. — A man from Conover was fighting for his life Monday after being beaten and shot in the face across the street from an assisted living center in Hickory.
Police said Shantwon Wright was beaten so badly they didn't know he had a gunshot wound until after he was rushed to the hospital.
Investigators said a family member alerted them to the incident in a field near the Trinity Village Assisted Living Center.
Police charged Monte Conner with assault early Sunday morning but have not released a motive behind the attack.
