Police: Monroe mother, boyfriend charged after 3-year-old found wandering

Police arrested Sarah Whitmore and Eric Brockus.

MONROE, N.C. — Police said a mother and her boyfriend are facing charges after they left their young child home alone.

Police in Monroe said a building inspector noticed a 3-year-old wandering alone near a house under construction in the Glendalough subdivision, off Poplin Road.

Detectives said the child managed to get out and wander down the road because neither her mother nor her mother's boyfriend were at home.

"It was determined that they had went to work and left the child home alone," said Monroe Police Department Sgt. Shannon Huntley.

Police arrested Sarah Whitmore and Eric Brockus.

Both are facing misdemeanor child abuse charges.

The child is now staying with relatives.
