Police: Motorcyclist dies days after hit-and-run in southwest Charlotte; Man facing charges

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges for a hit-and-run that left a motorcyclist dead in southwest Charlotte, police said.

Officers responded to a crash involving a car and motorcycle on June 28 just before 9 p.m. on South Tryon Street.

They found 35-year-old Clifton Chapman at the scene with life-threatening injuries and took him to a hospital. On July 7, Chapman died from his injuries.

Authorities said Chapman was traveling north on South Tryon Street when a car pulled out of a parking lot in front if him. Chapman struck the left side of the car.

Police said the other driver left the scene. After investigating, they identified the driver as 28-year-old Maynor Alexander Garcia-Zelay. He is facing charges for felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license.

Police said Chapman was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
